Day Trip to Homestead and Fairbury

Day trip to Homestead and Fairbury (December 13th)

Christmas was coming up fast but still the weather was so great that it beckoned us to hit the road again. I saw on Facebook that Carolyn Osborn had put up a beautiful Christmas display at their place south of Fairbury so we decided to make a trip to Fairbury, via Homestead National Historical Park outside of Beatrice.

We started the day by taking Ken’s pickup into Wayne’s Body Shop to get it repaired after hitting that deer almost a month ago.  After lunch we drove down to Homestead.  We walked through the exhibits for a bit and then headed outside to walk the trails. The trail we took led us along the fence line and then down into the trees. That’s where we found this huge cottonwood tree.

The walk was really nice so we said we would try to get back here again sometime soon and walk over to the Education Center.

When we left there we headed to Fairbury. We first drove through Crystal Springs because someone had taken the time to set up some Christmas lights there. They had lights strung along the road and a few displays. Hopefully they can grow this more each year.

Onward, to Osborn’s. A nice drive south of Fairbury, I’ve always enjoyed that area. It was almost dark by the time we got to there. The picture doesn’t do it justice.

It was getting late and time to head home. We decided to take Highway 136 back to Beatrice. Along the way we took a short side trip at Harbine to go by Deb and Matt Umland’s place where they had a number of Christmas displays as well.

Made it home in good time to do chores and eat. Chalk this one up as another great day trip.
