Ken thought today would be a good day to extract our honey. Good thing, because we are almost out of honey and that would mean I would have to actually buy some, tsk tsk. Ours is so much better!!
He brought up a box of 6 frames to be extracted. You can see in the back of his old pickup, some of the supplies he uses to work with the bees. The smoker and bee brush.
Most of the frames looked pretty full.
Then we set everything up in the garage. This is our first time doing it by ourselves so after this I think I need to make a list of what all we need before we start.
Ken uses his decapping tool to open all the honey cell and then he puts two of them in the extractor.
After the honey builds up in the bottom of the extractor we open the gate and let it run into a bucket that has a strainer in it. Look at the River of Gold, it’s so good.
The beeswax can build up on the strainer so I use a spatula to help move it out of the way so the honey can go through.
The bucket also has a gate, so we fill the honey bears from the bucket.
We got 12-24oz. bottles and 2-12oz. bottles. It will be so good this winter on toasted homemade bread and Ken drinks a lot of hot water with honey.
After that its time to clean the garage and get all of the sticky off the floor, but even as I’m sitting here I can feel spots of honey on my arm. Guess we could find some months later in the house, kind of like tinsel from the Christmas trees or plastic grass from the Easter baskets.
