A couple of weeks ago we had been talking that with all the snow we should go sledding on the dam at Wagon Train Lake. We had some really heavy snows during the week but it was suppose to be in the 50’s by the weekend, so we decided that if we were going to go sledding we better do it Friday evening. The moon was full just a few days earlier so it should still be big and bright enough for us to see . . . so we thought. I texted Aaron and Kalie to see if they wanted to come and they thought it sounded like fun but they would have to see how things went on Friday.
Since Friday was a pretty warm day, I drove by the dam just to see if there was any snow left. The snow had melted on the lower part for most of the dam, but the far east part still had snow cover all the way down. In fact, there were a bunch of kids sledding there which was great to see. I texted Aaron and Kalie, but it wasn’t going to work for them to come so Ken and I went by ourselves. When we left around 7:00 p.m. the moon still hadn’t showed its face but the lights from the surrounding acreages, Hickman and Lincoln never let the nights get too dark around here. Even though we couldn’t make out the terrain, we picked a spot and both of us got on the toboggan. After a little nudging we took off down the hill. The warmer weather made the snow a little icy on top so we were really flying and then we must have it a ramp made by the kids earlier that day because suddenly we really were flying . . . in the air. Ken said later that he was thinking that the ride was very smooth until he realized that we were airborne. Thankfully there was some good snow where we landed but we still hit hard. Ken said he felt the hit up his spine and my backside really hurt. We cruised on for a while and then finally tipped over in some deeper snow. We laughed and groaned for a bit while we lay there, then climbed back up the dam. We moved to a different spot and went down again with no problems. After that I used the saucer and Ken went down on the toboggan until we were tired of climbing back up the hill. We spent the rest of our time there lying on top of the dam looking at the beautiful stars. The sky was clear and there was no wind (and no moon) so it was a perfect evening to look for our favorite constellations. The moon finally came up shortly after we got home and it was a glowing orange. Very beautiful.
Maybe we’ll grow up one of these days:)
