Farm Update

Brandy has been very hard on our corral fences. She stretches over to reach the grass in the spring before we let them out into the pasture. She usually has prickly spots on her chest where she’s pushed on the barbs of the fence and a number of times she’s gotten caught up in the barbwire and gotten some pretty nasty cuts. Also during the spring Frosty will stick his head through the fence for the grass and he rubs is mane very short.

So this year we decided to spend some “big bucks” and put up continuous fence. Most of the panels are 24 feet long and very very heavy. We started with the north side and have that finished. But . . . .

of course, Brandy thought before we took all of the barbwire fence down she would get herself caught up in it just one more time for old times sake!! She had the whole bottom strand of the south line pulled off all of the posts and she has the wounds to prove it.

She has a number of cuts up and down her front leg
and one really bad one on the back of her leg. She didn’t want to stand still while I was taking this picture but its worse than it looks as you go around the leg. We’ve been putting this EMT gel on it every night and every morning and since its so tender its quite a chore to actually get some in the wound. Looks like it will be a few weeks before I will be riding her again.
I’m hoping this will be the last time Brandy gets caught in the wire and Ken’s hoping that by this time next year Frosty will have a long beautiful mane!!
BABY CHICKS!!
This year I bought 6 chicks at Orschlens and 5 of them have made it so far. I’m not sure what breed they are but there are 2 gray ones, 2 that are brown and little small and one with feathers on his feet. I call him (or her) Al – short for Albatross because he looks kind of awkward when he walks. Ken’s been giving all them worms from the garden, so they usually run up to you when you open the coop door.
This is Al. A little squattier than the others.
